The Good Soldier (1915)

John Dowell keeps returning to the history of two apparently respectable couples, changing the order and the emphasis as he tells it. Treat those returns as part of his effort to understand, rather than a failure to provide a tidy chronology. The emotional question is how much he knew about the people closest to him. A strong next step after a more straightforward novel, with betrayal and uncertainty built into the telling.
