As I Lay Dying (1957)

A family's journey to bury its mother becomes a chorus of private needs, resentment, practical calculation and grief. The speakers do not simply fill gaps in the route: they make the same duty mean different things. Cash's concrete reasoning and Darl's more unstable perceptions provide particularly striking contrasts. The short sections can be difficult, with dialect, fractured time and painful material. A cast list helps, but the uncertainty is part of the form.
