Alternating family lines move from two half-sisters in Ghana through later generations on both sides of the Atlantic. Each chapter asks you to take a new person's immediate pressures seriously, while the accumulated history changes how you understand opportunity and inheritance. These are shifting close perspectives rather than one continuous first-person chorus. The repeated departures can be emotionally abrupt, and slavery, racism and violence make the family connections painful.
