Twelve interlinked lives, mostly those of Black women in Britain, challenge the idea that a shared label produces a shared outlook. Age, class, sexuality and family history change what each person notices and what they believe they have overcome. The flowing, lightly punctuated form helps a thought pass into another life without making the differences disappear. Choose it for recognition that can be affectionate and argumentative at once, not a set of exemplary spokespeople.
