Jennifer Kent makes a mother's exhaustion and a child's rituals part of the haunted home's practical life. Essie Davis keeps the fear attached to work and grief rather than a single diagnostic label. The Nightingale later moves into a different historical violence, while this first feature shows a strong command of subjective pressure.
