Charlotte Wells makes a child's holiday and an adult's incomplete reconstruction occupy the same small gestures. The confidence lies in how little she needs to explain while Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal keep the relationship legible. This first feature announces a distinctive formal voice; its reputation need not depend on predicting every step of her later career.

About Aftersun
Sophie reflects on the shared joy and private melancholy of a holiday she took with her father twenty years earlier. Memories fill the gaps between camcorder footages as she tries to reconcile the father she knew with the troubled man she didn't.
