The recommendation letter is routine institutional labour with a life beyond the person writing it. Jason Fitger’s irritation is very funny, but the repeated requests also expose what students need from someone with a permanent position and professional contacts. Schumacher lets care emerge through his poor judgement. A short choice for the daily work of helping other people secure opportunities, even when the helper is making an excellent mess of it.
