Saturday Night and Sunday Morning (1958)
Book
Published
Factory worker Arthur Seaton wants wages to buy him a life, including drinking, sex and time beyond the machine. The Nottingham setting gives his defiance a particular texture rather than making him an emblem of hardship. His selfishness and treatment of women matter too: choose this for a forceful, contradictory character, rather than a reassuring working-class hero.
