The Trial (1925)

Josef K. is accused without being told what he has done, then finds his life increasingly organised around a process he cannot understand. Kafka catches the way an institution recruits people into maintaining its authority simply by making them seek an explanation. Its black comedy comes with real dread. This unfinished, posthumously published novel offers no tidy procedural lesson; that refusal is part of its force.
