Flatland (1884)
Book

A respectable square explains a society in which your shape establishes your place. Abbott makes hierarchy look both geometrically inevitable and conspicuously absurd, then tests the narrator's confidence with an encounter beyond his dimensions. The mathematical fantasy is short, but its assumptions about women and class reward an annotated edition. A Square can recognise one limitation while remaining blind to another, which is a particularly good joke about institutional expertise.
