The dud avocado (1958)

Sally Jay Gorce wants Paris to provide experience, freedom and a sufficiently interesting version of herself. Her narration keeps colliding with the mess of getting those things. Dundy's first novel earns its place through comic timing and the heroine's simultaneous candour and self-dramatisation. A good choice for readers who want a voice with social appetite, capable of making an awkward evening as entertaining as a grand adventure.
