Ruth's account of growing up beside a lake turns houses, water and drifting into a language for memory and belonging. Robinson's first novel is already willing to let an image or a long sentence carry an argument about how a person should live. The sisters' life with their unconventional aunt gives that lyricism a practical tension. Slow down for it; grief, suicide and estrangement run beneath the beauty.
