The Return of the Native (1878)
Book

Egdon Heath is a working environment, a route network and a place that different characters want to escape or recover. Hardy makes those incompatible desires harder to dismiss by giving the heath such a sustained presence. Its inhabitants read paths, lights and weather through local experience. The opening is deliberately expansive and the story tragic; the reward is a rural setting whose meaning changes with a person's work and expectations.
