The Hungry Tide (2004)
Book
Published
Tides repeatedly erase the apparent boundary between land and water in the Sundarbans. A visiting dolphin researcher, a translator and a local fisherman bring different forms of knowledge to that unstable ground. Ghosh connects ecological richness to the difficult terms on which people make a living there. Conservation, displacement and political memory complicate every attractive view; the dangers include both violent weather and violence inflicted on people.
