The Books of Jacob gathers the followers, opponents, translators and observers around the eighteenth-century religious leader Jacob Frank. Jennifer Croft’s English translation lets competing perspectives accumulate without giving one witness the final word. Keep a little note of names and places, and read the physical book in the usual direction despite its reverse page numbering. Its scale serves the question of how a movement is made and remembered.
