The Luminaries (2013)

A newcomer encounters a tangled mystery in the New Zealand goldfields, where money and information pass through a surprisingly small social world. The opening asks you to keep track of many men and their connections; later returns make those introductions useful. Its changing chapter lengths and elaborate structure add another rhythm, but the practical pleasure is watching separate accounts alter one another.
