Dublin's meals, errands, work, funerals and evening wanderings become the meeting ground of private minds and public life. Joyce follows 16 June 1904 into the early hours of the following morning, so this is one continuous waking day and night. The changing styles demand patience and an edition with useful notes. In return, repeated routes and incidental encounters make a single city's day feel inexhaustible.
