A single man (1964)

George gets through a teaching day in Southern California while carrying a loss that most people around him cannot see. A class, a conversation and an evening meeting acquire weight because the book stays so close to one day's effort of being present. The memories of his partner belong to that effort, rather than to a separate unfolding chronology. Isherwood's clear, controlled prose makes this an intimate counterpoint to the crowded city novels.
