The Thing Around Your Neck (2009)
Book
Published
Nigeria and the United States recur from different class positions and at different distances from home. Adichie varies the narrators and circumstances enough to make belonging an argument, rather than one representative immigrant experience. The independent stories gain from being read together: assumptions about marriage, religion or opportunity rarely survive unchanged into the next piece. Expect painful encounters with racism, loss and violence alongside the intimate observation.
