The Emperor's Soul (2012)

An imprisoned forger must use her talent for altering the histories of objects to attempt something much more dangerous: reconstructing a ruler's soul. The deadline and confined situation give the magic a clear purpose from the outset. This self-contained novella makes the work of understanding a craft part of its suspense. A compact route for readers who like practical ingenuity with a philosophical question about identity inside it.
