A month in the country (1980)
Book
Published
Tom Birkin earns his living uncovering a medieval wall painting in a Yorkshire church. The patient return to the same surface gives his summer a structure that his damaged private life lacks. Carr makes restoration a form of skilled attention, with satisfaction measured in what can be recovered and understood. This short, quiet novel is the clearest starting point here for the pleasure of doing a bounded piece of work well.
