The City We Became (2020)
Book
Published
New York’s boroughs acquire human embodiments whose different loyalties cannot simply be folded into one convenient identity. Their need to act together turns arguments about race, neighbourhood and belonging into the mechanics of the fantasy. The city is made through relationships and cultural activity, and exclusion has material consequences. Expect confrontational urban adventure with racist hostility and cosmic menace, rather than an agreeable committee meeting.
