Raising an orphaned dragon turns conservation from an abstract cause into feeding schedules, secrecy and exhausting shared work. The staff at Smokehill must decide how to protect a creature whose needs do not fit existing law or public assumptions. Jake’s talkative account gives this modern-world fantasy its distinctive rhythm. The community includes difficult nonhuman obligations, with poaching, grief and real danger behind the hopeful work.
