The Last Unicorn (1968)

A unicorn leaves her woodland to discover what has happened to the rest of her kind. The travelling companions, sudden jokes and strange encounters make the journey inviting, while the sadness gives its beauty something to stand against. The original novel completes that quest. Beagle later returned to the world in the shorter stories collected in The Way Home; those are optional visits, not missing final chapters.
