The Fifth Season (2015)

Orogenes control seismic energy in a world where the ground itself is a threat. Heat, force and the danger of misjudgement give their power a physical weight, while the society's response makes training inseparable from coercion. Jemisin's shifting perspectives ask you to learn more than the mechanics. Start this for an emotionally punishing, structurally ambitious trilogy in which understanding power also means understanding who is allowed to wield it.
