The Emperor's Soul (2012)

Shai's Forgery changes something by giving it a convincing alternative history. A solution therefore depends on understanding the subject, not simply supplying more power. The demand to reconstruct an emperor's soul makes research, plausibility and artistic judgement part of the suspense. This compact novella is a particularly good starting point if you want an intricate system developed through one concentrated task rather than a long campaign.
