Magical jade strengthens trained warriors, but the ability to use it safely is neither universal nor unlimited. Lee makes that resource shape family obligations, street violence and the economy of an entire island. The pleasure is seeing a power system become a social system, with individuals who cannot be reduced to their abilities.
