Akata witch (2011)

Okorafor gives Nigerian American Sunny a magical education grounded in Nigerian surroundings, Igbo speech and the Nsibidi writing tradition. The Leopard People and their rules are imaginative creations, with friendship and learning driving the adventure. Start here for a young adult novel where cultural knowledge shapes how magic is understood, rather than supplying names for a familiar European school story. First in the Nsibidi Scripts series.
