Black Leopard, Red Wolf (2019)

James builds an invented world through extensive engagement with African histories and storytelling, giving Tracker a disputed account of a search for a missing child. The monsters, competing voices and broken narrative resist the idea of one tidy continental mythology. This is a demanding opening to a trilogy, with graphic violence and sexual violence. Choose it for the argument over who gets to tell a story, as much as for its creatures.
