The ghost bride (2013)
Book
Published
In nineteenth-century Malacca, Li Lan is offered a marriage to a dead man and finds herself caught in the affairs of the living and the afterlife. Choo draws on Chinese ghost-marriage customs and the strange tales of Pu Songling, then invents an elaborate supernatural mystery. Chinese Malaysian households, social obligations and local history give the story its particular setting. An atmospheric introduction, with romance and danger rather than a catalogue of beliefs.
