Elle Woods is allowed to become capable without surrendering her clothes, her cheerfulness or her loyalty to other women. Reese Witherspoon makes that refusal a terrific source of comic energy. For a day spent being underestimated, there is comfort in a film that treats kindness and intelligence as entirely compatible.
