Crash (2005)

Best Picture, 2006 ceremony. The Los Angeles ensemble's reversals can hit hard on a first pass, with Matt Dillon and Thandiwe Newton giving the encounters real force. Returning to them, the chain of coincidences makes people seem arranged to deliver lessons about prejudice on schedule. The rescue sequence remains powerful; the surrounding machinery gives me less room to reconsider the characters than its ambitious network initially suggests.
