Kraken (2010)

A museum employee is pulled into a London of rival sects, secret workers and apocalyptic claims after a preserved giant squid disappears. Miéville treats the hidden city as a place with organisations, grudges and peculiar kinds of labour. The Natural History Museum opens the door, but the novel soon ranges far beyond one landmark. A dense, funny and sometimes gruesome standalone for readers happy to get productively lost.
