Legend (1984)

Druss's name has become a legend while the man himself has grown old enough to know what fighting costs. Called back to a fortress facing overwhelming odds, he brings authority earned through a lifetime of battles rather than youthful certainty. The book is direct, bloody heroic fantasy, with courage given weight by the possibility of failure. Read it for an ageing warrior whose reputation is useful but cannot do the work for him.
