Between two fires (2012)

A disgraced knight accompanies a girl across plague-stricken medieval France as an unearthly conflict reaches into their path. Buehlman's horrors are vicious, but the question of whether a ruined person can protect somebody keeps the journey from becoming a parade of atrocities. Choose it for redemption under extreme pressure and images with the force of a nightmare. Religious horror and dark fantasy meet here; the suffering is explicit.
