Tooth and Claw (2003)

Walton imagines a society made entirely of dragons, with inheritance disputes, marriage prospects and class anxieties built into their biology. Eating another dragon can be a route to power, so a familiar Victorian family argument becomes alarmingly literal. The wit depends on taking the creatures’ needs seriously. A standalone for adults who want dragons to be social protagonists with their own institutions, rather than humans’ spectacular companions.
