The Fifth Season (2015)

The Broken Earth is a complete trilogy, beginning with The Fifth Season. Jemisin makes the people capable of managing geological catastrophe subject to a society that fears and exploits them. That contradiction holds together the immense stakes and the intimate story of a mother seeking her child. Its shifting narrative form asks for attention, while the violence and abuse make it a demanding three books rather than an easy short alternative.
