Small Gods (1992)
Book

A god reduced to a tortoise discovers how little a powerful religious institution may have to do with belief. Brutha's sincerity gives Pratchett's satire its weight: compassion and responsibility have to survive the machinery claiming to represent them. Choose it for a funny, angry distinction between devotion and obedience, rather than a simple dismissal of believers. This Discworld novel works as an independent starting point.
