Jim Carrey's bright public manner becomes a performance the character has never knowingly agreed to give. Small hesitations make the familiar energy newly vulnerable. The shift is towards sustained dramatic uncertainty inside the comedy, rather than a claim that his earlier physical precision was somehow less demanding acting.
