The main reason for this collection's place is Story of Your Life, in which linguist Louise Banks learns an alien system of communication and the narrative's understanding of time changes with it. Chiang makes the intellectual premise inseparable from a mother's relation to her child. Choose it for concentrated, emotionally consequential speculation. This is a mixed collection, not eight linguistics stories; the title story also formed the basis of Arrival.
