In Other Lands (2017)

Elliot enters a magical school and remains inconveniently convinced that diplomacy is preferable to hitting things. His bisexual coming-of-age unfolds through awkward romances, elves, mermaids and a friendship trio that changes over several years. Brennan's young adult portal fantasy is funny without pretending its neglected, prickly hero has no hurt to work through. Romance is prominent and war is real; the rewarding adventure is learning to care more skilfully.
