The Martian (2011)

Stranded on Mars, Mark Watney makes keeping himself alive an accumulating series of chemistry, engineering and food problems. The calculations are frequent but explained in everyday language, while his jokes and the work of the rescue team give the procedures a human pulse. Start here for accessible, practical ingenuity under pressure. The violent opening storm is a known concession to the plot, not an accurate measure of what Martian winds could do.
