Ang Lee makes the sea and the tiger sensorially persuasive while retaining the importance of someone telling the story afterwards. The visual invention serves Martel's interest in the relationship between experience and the account we can bear to give it. A useful choice for readers open to spectacle doing philosophical work, with the animal danger and loss making the beauty far from uncomplicated.
