True Grit (2010)
Movie
Released
Hailee Steinfeld's Mattie treats bargaining and moral certainty as practical tools, preserving the force of Portis's distinctive young narrator. The Coens let formal speech be funny without making her determination a joke. Choose this 2010 version for its abrasive humour and the uneasy cost of getting what she insists upon, rather than expecting the older John Wayne film's particular warmth.
