Atonement (2007)

Joe Wright turns a story about the damage of interpretation into scenes whose meaning changes when another viewpoint arrives. Christopher Hampton's adaptation preserves the novel's concern with a writer's responsibility, rather than treating the romance as an isolated tragedy. Choose it for an emotionally forceful translation of guilt and imagination, with false accusation and wartime suffering central to its cost.
