An unkindness of ghosts (2017)

The HSS Matilda carries a racial hierarchy into the future, with the labour sustaining the ship distributed as unjustly as its comforts. Aster’s medical work and investigations expose the connection between bodily survival, restricted knowledge and inherited authority. Choose it for a generation ship understood through the people made to do its hardest work. This is an unflinching novel involving slavery, racism, sexual violence and trauma, with precise, unusual prose rather than an engineering-led adventure.
