The bird king [large print] (2019)

Wilson sets The Bird King in 1491, in the last Muslim sultanate on the Iberian peninsula. Fatima's friend Hassan can make maps that change the places they depict, a power with obvious uses for rulers and terrifying consequences for its owner. Their escape makes questions of borders, faith and belonging personal. Historical Granada gives the journey its pressure; Hassan's impossible cartography and the refuge they seek belong to Wilson's invention.
