Two lovers help shape the personality of an artificial man, and discover that designing someone does not settle what they owe him. McEwan puts the ethical argument inside a recognisable domestic triangle, where motives are much less orderly than the machine's reasoning. The leap is an alternative 1982 with advanced artificial intelligence and a changed political history. Choose it for awkward character judgements and moral disagreement, allowing room for the novel's historical digressions.
