Kindred (1979)

Dana is abruptly pulled from her own life into the slaveholding past, where historical knowledge offers far less protection than she might hope. Butler makes the impossible journey a way to examine family dependence, coercion and the compromises survival can force. The time travel is accepted as a premise rather than taught as a mechanism. A gripping route for readers of historical fiction, with unflinching violence and a perspective that makes comfortable distance from history difficult.
