Parable of the Sower (1993)
Book

Lauren's journal treats a collapsing society as a succession of urgent decisions about supplies, trust, neighbours and belief. Her unusual hyperempathy is one speculative element, but the larger pressure comes from institutions and protections that no longer hold. Butler's direct prose makes the social argument immediate, while Lauren's plans give the journey purpose. Choose it for practical intelligence under brutal conditions; Parable of the Talents continues the story rather than making this a complete account of Lauren's life.
